INDIANAPOLIS ? One word from Giants special teams captain Zak DeOssie will begin the Super Bowl.
With more than 100 million people watching in the United States alone, the long snapper from New York, other Giants captains and their counterparts from New England will see referee John Parry display both sides of a special commemorative coin for the opening toss.
Then, DeOssie will choose his side.
"I've called `tails' every single time this year, and that's what it's going to be this weekend," DeOssie said in an interview Thursday.
Chances are, he'll be right.
The National Conference has won the last 14 Super Bowl coin flips, though that hasn't turned out so well in the end. The American Conference has won nine of those 14 title games.
Want to pick the Super Bowl winner? Might as well just flip a coin. The team that's won the opening toss is only 22-23 in the title game, evidence that it has very little impact on whatever happens next.
It's still a special moment, one that gamblers lay money on and businesses build promotions around. One chain is offering its rewards program customers a free pizza if the coin comes up heads.
It's also significant in another way: A rare game decision left entirely up to the players.
"I'm out of that one," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Thursday. "We have our captains and they decide who's going to make that call. We do keep track of who wins and who loses, thank you very much."
DeOssie, whose father Steve also played in the NFL, got the honor on a whim.
He and the other two Giants captains ? quarterback Eli Manning and defensive end Justin Tuck ? were walking toward midfield before the season opener in Washington when the subject came up for the first time.
"Eli turned to Tuck and said, `You want to call it?'" DeOssie said. "And Tuck said, `Nah, I don't feel like it. I don't need to call it. Zak, you want to call it?' I said yeah, sure."
It was his job the rest of the way.
In the NFL, the visiting team gets to call the coin flip. DeOssie went 4-4 during the regular season, and the Giants chose to receive the kickoff rather than defer all four times. It came up heads during a second-round playoff win at Green Bay, but DeOssie got the coin to land his way twice during a win at San Francisco in the NFC title game, including overtime.
Coughlin wouldn't say what he'll pick if it comes up tails on Sunday. He has chosen to receive the kickoff most times.
Like everything else in the NFL, coin flips are tracked for trends.
During the 2011 regular season, teams that won the flip and chose to take the ball went 71-79, according to STATS LLC. Teams that deferred to the second half were 64-42. Weather and home-field advantage play into those results.
The first Super Bowl coin flip landed on the grass at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Jan. 15, 1967. Green Bay captains Bob Skoronski and Willie Davis met Kansas City's captains at midfield, won the toss and the game.
Two years later, the Jets' Joe Namath guaranteed a victory. The Jets won the coin toss and fulfilled the guarantee, too.
There have been a couple notable changes in the pregame flip since those early title games.
During a Thanksgiving game in Detroit in 1998, Pittsburgh's Jerome Bettis called tails for the overtime coin flip. The referee thought he heard heads and decided the Steelers lost the flip. They then lost the game 19-16 on a field goal, prompting a rule change.
Now, the captain calls it before the coin leaves the referee's hand.
The league changed its coin flip rule again for the 2008 season, allowing the winner to defer its choice to the second half.
Recent history between the Giants and Patriots suggests the flip will be a midair starting point for something spectacular.
Four years ago, New England was one win away from completing a perfect season when Eli Manning drove the Giants to a winning touchdown. David Tyree made an incredible third-down catch, trapping the ball against his helmet for a 32-yard gain. Manning threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress with 35 seconds left for a 17-14 win.
There was more Manning magic when the teams played again on Nov. 6 in Foxborough. He threw a 1-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds to go for a 24-20 win.
No wonder Patriots quarterback Tom Brady cares less about who gets the ball first than who has it last.
"It wouldn't surprise me if this game came down to the last 2 minutes," Brady said. "I hope we have the ball. I hope Eli doesn't have the ball."

(Reuters) ? An FDA advisory committee will meet in the second quarter to discuss Arena Pharmaceutical Inc's experimental obesity drug following the company's recent resubmission of an application seeking its approval, Arena said on Wednesday.
Arena's lorcaserin, which is being developed in partnership with Japanese drugmaker Eisai Co Ltd, was one of three new potential weight loss drugs rejected by the Food and Drug Administration over safety concerns.
Arena resubmitted its new drug marketing application to the agency last month after providing new data to health regulators that it believes will alleviate concerns about cancerous tumors found in rats used in animal studies of lorcaserin.
Obesity, a leading cause of diabetes, heart disease and other serious health problems, has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. But the FDA has set a very high approval bar for weight loss drugs because such a large portion of the general population is likely to want to take them.
Many industry observers believe approval of any new weight loss drug remains a longshot. But the FDA is likely to give serious consideration to any recommendation by its advisory panel of experts.
Vivus Inc and Orexigen Therapeutics Inc are also working to convince the FDA of the worth of their weight loss drugs after initial rejections.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? A federal judge denied a petition on Tuesday that would have allowed anti-Wall Street protesters to keep camping - at least temporarily - in two parks in the nation's capital where they have lived for months.
The National Park Service had banned protesters with the Occupy DC movement from camping in McPherson Square, a few blocks from the White House, starting at noon on Monday.
Scores of protesters have vowed to remain entrenched at the square and at a second site, Freedom Plaza. The demonstrators have been camped at the parks since October.
U.S. District Judge James Boasberg rejected a motion by Dane Primerano, of Riceboro, Georgia, for a temporary restraining order halting enforcement of the no-camping rule based on constitutional guarantees of free speech.
While similar "Occupy" protests against social and economic inequality in other U.S. cities have been shut down by police, the demonstrations in the capital have survived an unusually warm winter and a permissive approach by federal authorities reluctant to provoke confrontation.
Despite their small numbers, the Washington protesters enjoy outsized media attention because their camps are just blocks from President Barack Obama's official residence. One is next to K Street, a wide thoroughfare that is home to many lobbyists and is synonymous with corporate influence in the capital.
While Obama has not explicitly backed the protests, he has made economic inequality a central theme of his re-election campaign and called for higher taxes on wealthier Americans, angering his Republican opponents.
The judge, in declining to halt enforcement of the no-camping rule, cited a 1984 Supreme Court ruling that barred demonstrators from camping in Lafayette Park next to the White House to draw attention to the plight of the homeless.
"I see no distinction in this case," Boasberg said.
The judge agreed, however, to a request by a lawyer for the protesters to order the Park Service to give demonstrators notice if authorities decide to clear McPherson Square.
While they have not started to clear the sites, police on Monday told demonstrators that they had to remove a tarpaulin decorated with stars and moons they had draped over the square's statue of Civil War General James McPherson.
Demonstrators stayed under the tarpaulin, dubbed the "tent of dreams," overnight, playing Scrabble and talking. After hours of debate, protesters decided to leave it up to police to remove the tarp but not resist as a group.
A passerby, Paul Ferro, tried to tear down the tarp but was restrained by protesters.
"You've just got to keep out there pounding the pavement, there's money to be made," Ferro, a 40-year-old elevator mechanic from Maryland, told reporters.
A University of Delaware survey said on Monday that nearly one in five Americans had heard nothing about the "Occupy" movement four months since the protests began.
Among those aware of the movement, one-third could not identify the protesters' main message, that too few people control most U.S. wealth and power, according to the poll of 901 adults.

As some of you have read I recently had a miscarriage. It was horrid but it has been one of my greatest lessons.
I thought I wanted a baby, but actually, when I was faced with the reality I freaked out.
I didn't enjoy being pregnant at all. The romantic ideal of a blossoming mother-to-be was very opposite of my bloated, nauseous and pale self. In truth, I felt out of control, as if I'd been invaded by an alien. I ate like a pig, farted like one too. I felt fat and ugly -- so dressed for 8 months when it was only 2. I have a whole range of baggy leggings and t-shirts now that I hope never to wear again.
Since then it prompted lots of soulsearching.
I now realize I needed the miscarriage to work through some of these feelings before it happens again. I just wasn't ready.
The big question now is when will I be ready?
The odds are a bit against me if you read baby books. I'm not far off 40, everyone tells me my body clock is about to go ping and yet I still feel young and carefree. I want to live my life still. To walk across Paris at dawn or go to Ibiza on a whim for a mad 24 hour clubathon. I am also so happy and in love with my beau. I don't need any more. And maybe at a subconscious level I'm scared a baby would change that. Our love life would somehow suffer.
I love children. But I have seen myself as one of them. I love my husband's kids but I enjoy the upside -- the fun, playtime yet little responsibility. I have also never needed to have kids. I have friends with such a strong maternal instinct that they had decided names and schools before they'd left school themselves.
But if you push me I know deep down I'd love a baby. A child of love. I know it will make me a better person. Clearly that's not a reason to have one, but I know that I will stop fannying around and step up to the plate. Instead of fretting about being a few pounds overweight I will have flesh and blood to worry about.
They key for me is that I have to stop thinking that I am not good enough and that I somehow need to turn into a supermom. Stewing prunes, knitting booties and hypnobirthing kinda mom.
When I was pregnant I stopped all things bad and nasty. Not a single chemical passed my mouth. I also stopped enjoying things I loved. Sex. Sport. Dancing.
In my head, moms meant no more vibrant me. It was about baby first even if I suffered as a result. As my therapist has explained feelings of abandonment have created a desire for hyperprotection. I need to let go of that.
Being me needs to be good enough. Otherwise I guess it will never work. The baby will sense my insecurity and the cycle will repeat.
I guess am letting all of this settle in or in technical terms "integrate." Time is against me. But happiness is more important in the long run. Here's hoping that I can find my groove as a mom.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Actress Cynthia Nixon is trying to clarify her earlier remarks that got her in hot water with some fellow gay rights activists.
The "Sex and the City" star's personal life became an exercise in the politics of sexual orientation last week when The New York Times Magazine quoted Nixon saying that for her, being gay was a conscious choice. Nixon has been in a relationship with a woman for eight years. Before that, she spent 15 years and had two children with a man.
After some gay rights activists complained that Nixon's remarks could be used to deny a biological basis for homosexuality, the actress on Monday released a statement to The Advocate magazine explaining she is technically bisexual, and not by choice.
Nixon told the magazine: "What I have 'chosen' is to be in a gay relationship."
