Obama hails auto bailout, hits back at GOP critics

(AP) ? President Barack Obama proudly embraced his auto industry bailout Tuesday, telling a raucous labor audience that assertions by his Republican presidential challengers that union members profited from taxpayer-paid rescue are a "load of you know what."

Obama delivered a politically sizzling and staunchly pro-union speech to the United Auto Workers just as voters in Michigan, a center of auto manufacturing, went to the polls to cast their ballots in the state's Republican nominating contest.

In a campaign style setting, union president Bob King praised Obama as "the champion of all workers" who "saved our jobs and saved our industry," an introduction that elicited chants of "Four more years!" from a crowd estimated at about 1,700 UAW members.

The speech was part of an Obama strategy to steal some of the political limelight from Republicans on the same days that states hold their GOP primary votes or caucuses.

In highlighting the auto industry's comeback, Obama drew a distinct contrast with Republican presidential candidates such as Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, both of whom have said they would not have used government money to save General Motors and Chrysler.

Obama's speech came as auto sales are surging, on a pace to exceed 14 million this year. Auto makers and parts companies added more than 38,000 jobs last year, with industry employment averaging 717,000 for 2011. And automakers have announced plans to add another 13,000 jobs this year.

Romney on Sunday said Obama favored the UAW in the bailout and that the president was "paying off the people that supported him."

Obama did not mention the Republican presidential contenders by name, but he left no doubt they were his targets.

"You've got folks saying. 'Well, the real problem is, what we really disagreed with was the workers, they all made out like bandits; that saving the American auto industry was just about paying back unions,'" Obama said. "Really? Even by the standards of this town, that's a load of you-know-what."

He noted that under the agreement to use taxpayer money to save GM and Chrysler, union members had to agree to reduced wages and that thousands of retirees saw reductions in their health care benefits.

"But they're still talking about you as if you're some special interest that needs to be beaten down," Obama said.

Despite the not-so-veiled references at Republican presidential contenders, the White House insisted Obama's remarks were not a political campaign speech, but rather a policy address about the state of the auto industry.

"These are substantive policy issues that affected hundreds of thousands, even millions of Americans," White House spokesman Jay Carney said. "And they're very worth speaking about, as president."

The Republican Party weighed in, doubling down on the claim that in authorizing the bailout Obama was simply doing the bidding of labor. "This is an insider deal for his union cronies who got billions in bailout money and are now backing Obama's re-election campaign," said Kirsten Kukowski of the Republican National Committee.

In his speech, Obama cast himself in heroic terms, saying he ran to "make the tough calls and do the right thing no matter what the politics."

In fact, Obama was not alone. Before Obama took office, President George W. Bush, faced with a reluctant Congress, directed more than $17 billion in emergency loans to GM and Chrysler in his final weeks in office. Bush demanded that the companies reduce their debt, negotiate wage and benefit cuts with workers and submit plans to achieve long-term viability.

In a veiled shot at Romney, Obama also said some critics wanted to "let Detroit go bankrupt." But Romney never used that phrase, though it was the headline on a November 2008 opinion piece he wrote for the New York Times. In that opinion piece, Romney called for a managed bankruptcy that would restructure the companies by letting them "shed excess labor, pension and real estate costs."

In his article, Romney added: "The federal government should provide guarantees for post-bankruptcy financing and assure car buyers that their warranties are not at risk."

The president sought to portray himself as a longtime ally of labor, recalling his days as a community organizer working with steel workers who had been laid off when their plants shut down.

"That still drives me today," he said, reiterating a line he uses in political campaign events. "So I'll promise you this: as long as you've got an ounce of fight left in you, I'll have a ton of fight left in me."

Obama also announced that his administration will crack down on unfair trade practices worldwide, a popular theme with labor and a counterpunch to Romney's tough-on-China rhetoric. Obama was signing an executive order creating an Interagency Trade Enforcement Center.

The office will expand the administration's ability to challenge unfair trading practices in China and elsewhere and coordinate enforcement activity across several U.S. government agencies. Obama's most recent budget proposal asks Congress for millions of dollars for the new enforcement center and more U.S. inspectors in China.

Supercharge Your 401k Retirement Plan - Heroic Investing

Welcome! If this is your first time visiting Jason Hartman's website, please read this page to learn more about what we do here. You may also be interested in receiving updates from our blog via RSS or via email if you prefer. If you have any questions about first responder finance feel free to contact us anytime! Thanks!

While the traditional world of work is certainly changing before our eyes (self employment and telecommuting), there is still a sizable percentage of the population with perhaps years of time and money vested in a 401k retirement plan. If this type of IRA is the centerpiece of your Golden Years strategy, let?s talk about how to make it even more powerful. The problem is that while everyone knows they SHOULD be maximizing their IRA, not many actually do. In fact, a report from the Employee Benefits Research Institute (a Washington DC think tank) indicates the median account balance across the nation to be about $18,000.

Before we go on, let?s review why an individual retirement plan such as a 401k is a good idea in the first place.

  • Money can be either invested or withdrawn on a tax free basis
  • Matching employer contributions can make the pot fill even faster

But back to the number $18,000. Yikes. This is roughly equivalent to one year of living frugally. VERY frugally. If this describes your retirement account, better plan on working a long time because eighteen grand won?t carry you far in this world of dizzying inflation. While it?s easy to make general admonitions, here are three specific actions you can take to jump start a 401k.

Don?t Let Ignorance Carry the Day
Let?s face it, most of claim to either be too busy or too uninformed to take an active role in the company pension plan, but it doesn?t have to be this way. Most pension plans have a ?default? portfolio they dump your money into unless you direct otherwise. This default is typically based around safe, low-yielding investments or a bucket collection based on actuarial tables related to your age. Please tell us you believe you deserve better than that. This is your one and only life! Don?t relegate yourself to skipping needed medicines and dining on Alpo just because you didn?t take the time to educate yourself about how to maximize your retirement plan. The default arrangement is almost guaranteed to be best for the company, but is it best for you? If not, make it so.

Cut Costs
For obvious reasons, high fee mutual funds are often preferred by plan administrators. After all, it makes them more money. While altruism is a wonderful thing, when it comes to arranging the investments in your portfolio, it?s time to get a little selfish. We?ve mentioned this before. Most mutual funds have far too modest returns to justify anything more than minimal expenses. While an employer might require you to keep your money in mutual funds, it doesn?t have to be a high-cost fund. There are plenty of solid low-cost funds out there. Find them!

Alternative Investments
This is an important one. You don?t have to confine your IRA investments to the antiquated notion of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Most now allow investors to branch off into such alternative investments as oil and gas, precious metals, tax lien certificates, and our all time favorite ? real estate!Should you decide to explore these non-traditional options, be prepared for your plan manager to express his shock and disbelief, perhaps claiming, ?You can?t do that inside an IRA.? The truth is he?s both right and wrong. Maybe HE can?t do that inside the parameters of a company based plan but nothing?s stopping you from opening a self-directed plan. Self-directed means you get to choose which investments go inside it and if you want to invest in water in the desert, and the IRS allows it, by all means go ahead.?Keep in mind that a self-directed IRA has no default fall back safety position. Any investment vehicle it contains must be put there by you. A little more brain work, perhaps, but achieving control over your portfolio should be the goal of every investor. Nobody, and we mean nobody, cares more about your future than you. Don?t forget that.

Google?s Schmidt: If Google Gets It Right, There Will Be An Android In Every Pocket

schmidtThe number of people in the world has now reached 7 billion people, but the number that have been online are only at 2 billion, Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google, said today at a keynote presentation at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. "We need to be realists about technology," he said. The future, most easily, belongs to "ultra connected people" who can embrace the future of technology, but the majority of people do not fall into that category, he said as he kicked off a speech about what he sees as the role of technology in the world today, and carefully suggested what role Google could play in the game.

Blue and Bustless ? Coquette Lace Corset (Electric Blue Collection)

Coquette Lace Corset

Coquette Lace Corset

I buy a lot of pink and black lingerie.? Sometimes I spice it up with red.? How daring of me, right?? I just don?t find other colors that call to me like those do.? The Electric Blue line by Coquette changed that.? The bright blue featured in the four pieces of the line is just beyond beautiful.? This sex toy store was kind enough to send me the Lace Corset to review.

It looks beautiful just laying there.? The detailing is delicate yet sexy.? The lace at the bottom looks like just the right amount.? The bow isn?t so big that it?s obscene.? When I put it on, it?s a whole different story.
Sadly, my DD/D cups just don?t work well in this corset.? The corset squishes them downward and flattens them.? Not flattering at all.? There?s no distinction between the two cups which gives the breasts a ?uniboob? appearance.? That?s my husband?s term, not mine.? Some of this can be fixed by attaching the included straps.? With these, my boobs are no longer pushed down to my tummy.? My husband reports that it still looks as if I only have one gigantic boob when I wear this.

My husband says this may be his least favorite lingerie ever.? He won?t let me wear it for sex and won?t let me wear it out as a top.? He says it just looks bad.? I don?t think it?s near as terrible as he seems to think, but it?s not the most flattering to my chest.? Since my chest is the area I usually try to play up, I?m not a fan of that part of me looking less than spectacular.

Florida inmate whose case changed juvenile sentencing laws has prison term reduced

Reporting from Jacksonville, Fla.?

A Florida man who was the subject of a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision concerning the prison terms imposed upon juveniles has had his sentence reduced from life without parole to 25 years in prison.

Terrance Graham's sentence as a teenager was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 2010. In the resentencing, U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Lance M. Day noted that the Florida Legislature had failed to provide a mechanism for implementing the Supreme Court's ruling or provide judges with resentencing guidelines.

Graham, who has been in prison eight years, is slated to be released in 2029, at the age of 42.

Graham was 16 when he pleaded guilty to taking part in an armed robbery in a Florida barbecue restaurant. A year later, he was arrested for a home-invasion robbery. Under a Florida law that allowed juveniles to be treated as adults, Graham was sentenced to life without parole.

But in May 2010, the Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 decision in Graham's case that states could no longer sentence anyone under 18 to life without parole for crimes less serious than murder.

Day's ruling Friday followed a three-day resentencing hearing that covered Graham's troubled childhood and a debate over whether the inmate, now 25, was capable of maturing into a responsible adult or was forever stuck in adolescence.

Graham was described as a child who grew up in an unstable family with drug-addicted parents who moved around Jacksonville's poor neighborhoods. Graham's great-aunt testified that Terrance and his siblings were beaten, neglected and verbally abused by their mother.

Day said Graham's horrific childhood explained, but did not excuse, his conduct.

Psychologist Randy Otto, who testified for the defense, said Graham showed evidence of maturity with his determination to get his high school diploma in prison, which is not normally available to inmates serving life without parole. And he had only a handful of disciplinary infractions, none of which involved violence or aggression, though he thought he had no chance of release and nothing to lose, Otto said.

Forensic psychologist William Meadows disagreed. He said Graham has an antisocial personality disorder that is unlikely to change as he grows older. He will remain a man ruled by impulse, anger and immaturity, Meadows testified.

"For people with antisocial personality disorders, they stay stuck in adolescence," said Meadows, who testified for the state.

Mark Hunt takes out Cheick Kongo in the first round at UFC 144

Mark Hunt made his name in combat sports in Japan, as he was a well-known and credentialed kickboxer. He thanked the Japanese fans with a quick knockout of Cheick Kongo at UFC 144.

The two tentatively felt each other out, but when Kongo came inside, Hunt met him with a huge left that sent Kongo flying. Kongo returned to his feet, then Hunt threw a right-left combo that wobbled his opponent. He followed it with uppercuts until Kongo's legs fell out from underneath him. The bout was stopped at 2:11 in the first round.

At 37 years old, Hunt now has three straight wins in the UFC and an overall record of 8-7. For Kongo, this loss stops him from getting a three-fight win streak.

Dennis Mahon Guity And Daniel Mahon Acquitted In White Supremacist Bombing Trial

PHOENIX -- A white supremacist was convicted in a 2004 bombing that injured a black city official in suburban Phoenix, but his identical twin brother was acquitted.

The federal jury Friday stopped short of finding Dennis Mahon guilty of a hate crime.

The 61-year-old twins from Illinois were on trial for six weeks as dramatic testimony came from the bombing victim and a female government informant dubbed a "trailer park Mata Hari" by defense attorneys.

The jury found Dennis Mahon guilty of three charges in the bombing but found Daniel Mahon, also a white supremacist, not guilty of the one charge he faced: conspiracy to damage buildings and property by means of explosives.

The verdict came nearly eight years to the day since the Feb. 26, 2004, bombing that injured Don Logan, who is black and was Scottsdale's diversity director at the time. Logan was hospitalized for three days and needed four surgeries on his hand and arm. The bombing also injured a secretary.

Logan told The Associated Press that the verdict was bittersweet for him.

"It's not illegal to be a racist but it is illegal to act upon that racism, especially when you injure people," he said. "This, to me, is a hallmark case that reached that racial discord, that hate."

During the trial, prosecutors argued that the Mahon brothers bombed Logan on behalf of a group called the White Aryan Resistance, which they say encourages members to act as "lone wolves" and commit violence against non-whites and the government.

They played surveillance tapes of the brothers referring to Logan in racial slurs and a voicemail that Dennis Mahon left at the diversity office just months before the bombing in which he angrily said: "The white Aryan resistance is growing in Scottsdale. There's a few white people who are standing up."

Defense attorneys said that someone working for the city of Scottsdale was a likelier candidate because Logan's job made him unpopular. They also heavily criticized the use of 41-year-old Rebecca Williams as an informant, giving her the "trailer park Mata Hari" nickname ? a reference to the Dutch exotic dancer who was convicted of working as a spy for Germany during World War I.

Investigators recruited the former stripper to act like a government separatist and racist. She wore revealing clothes and sent racy photos to the brothers to win their trust.

Williams met the brothers in January 2005 after investigators set her up in a government-provided trailer at a campground in Catoosa, Okla., where the brothers were staying at the time.

Over the years, the three mostly spoke over the phone, but they got together in person on several occasions. While apart, she sent the brothers several revealing photos of herself, including one of her from behind wearing chaps, a Confederate bikini bottom and a black leather jacket. Another photo showed her in a white bikini top with a grenade hanging between her breasts as she posed in front of a pickup truck and a swastika.

Dennis Mahon opened up to Williams as their conversations were recorded, telling her how to make bombs after she told him a fictitious story that she wanted to harm a child molester she knew.

In one conversation, she asked Mahon if he ever had a bomb work, to which he replied: "Yeah, diversity officer."

He also told her that the bomb used on Logan was a 1-by-5-inch pipe bomb, a fact that investigators never released publicly and that prosecutors said proved that Mahon was guilty because only the bomber could have known it.

Dennis Mahon was found guilty of conspiracy to damage buildings and property by means of explosives; of malicious damage of a building by means of explosives; and distribution of information related to explosives. He faces between seven and 100 years in prison at his May 22 sentencing.

Logan testified, choking up as he recalled the chaos after the bomb went off in his hand and describing how he frantically ran down a hallway before kneeling down, hearing a secretary scream and looking down to see blood dripping on the carpet.

"I heard a pop that sounded like a gunshot and everything slowed down," he said.

On Friday, Logan said that every time he's been in court he tried to make eye contact with the Mahons, but that they never would look at him. But he noticed that they were watching him with intensity when he re-enacted the bombing during testimony.

"It was almost like they were getting off on me sharing that moment when they sent their prized gift and it detonated," he said.

Logan worked personally with the Justice Department to have prosecutors seek a hate-crime finding from jurors, which would have required whatever prison term Mahon gets to be longer. He said that when he speaks to U.S. District Judge David Campbell at the sentencing, he'll ask that Mahon spend the rest of his life behind bars.

"Dennis Mahon is a danger to any community, and to me, he doesn't deserve to be out," Logan said.

The cost of building Great Pyramid today

Even with cranes, helicopters, tractors and trucks at our disposal, it would be tough to construct the Great Pyramid of Giza today. Its construction 4,500 years ago is so astounding in some people's eyes that they invoke mystical or even alien involvement. But the current theory of the building of the Great Pyramid ? the notion that it was assembled from the inside out, via a spiraling internal ramp ? is probably still the best construction plan.

Following that plan, we could replicate the Wonder of the Ancient World for a cool $5 billion.

First, let's look at the blueprint: The pyramid is 756 feet long on each side, 481 feet high and composed of 2.3 million stones weighing nearly 3 tons each for a total mass of 6.5 million tons. Legend has it that the structure was erected in just 20 years' time, meaning that a block had to have been moved into place about every 5 minutes of each day and night. That pace would have required the (slave) labor of thousands.

While traditional theories hold that the pyramid was built via a long external ramp, such a ramp would have had to wind around for more than a mile to be shallow enough to drag stones up, and it would have had a stone volume twice that of the pyramid itself.

A new, more economical theory gaining traction among architects and Egyptologists holds that the bottom third of the pyramid's height was constructed by stones dragged up an external ramp. But above that ? for the remaining 33 percent or so of the pyramidal volume ? the Egyptians worked their way up through the inside of the structure, building around a gently sloping internal ramp and fitting stone blocks into place as they ascended.

Furthermore, the workers could have reused the stones quarried for the external ramp to build the pyramid's upper echelons, so that nothing went to waste.

Jean-Pierre Houdin, the French architect who developed the internal ramp theory, has collaborated with a team at Dassault Systems, a 3-D graphics firm, to create a virtual model of the construction process. A team of scholars at Laval University in Quebec is now planning an infrared imaging investigation, which could soon reveal the spiraling ramp within the Great Pyramid; if found, it will be the final proof of Houdin's theory. But whether or not the theory bears out, Houdin says an inside-out construction would still be the best way to build the Great Pyramid.

"I am quite sure we could do the same today, and it would be the most economical method," Houdin told Life's Little Mysteries.

There would be two main differences between pyramid-building now and then. First, "Instead of people pulling the sleds that carry the stones up the ramps, you would use something with an engine," he said. Secondly, "for the (topmost) 10 or 15 meters, you would use a small crane."

Just as cranes are lifted onto the tops of skyscrapers today, a helicopter would apposition a crane onto a flat top of the pyramid. Stones and other construction materials dragged up to that level via the internal ramp would then be set in place by the crane. (It wouldn't be feasible to build the entire structure with cranes, Houdin said, because they wouldn't be able to reach far enough to lift materials from the base to the center of the top of the pyramid.)

While the pyramid was originally built by 4,000 workers over the course of 20 years using strength, sleds and ropes, building the pyramid today using stone-carrying vehicles, cranes and helicopters would probably take 1,500 to 2,000 workers around five years, and it would cost on the order of $5 billion, Houdin said, based on manpower and cost of constructing the Hoover Dam in Colorado during the Great Depression. The dam contains a volume of concrete roughly equal to the stone in the pyramid. By comparison, the 1,776-foot-tall One World Trade Center being constructed in downtown Manhattan will cost an estimated $4 billion.

There are no plans to build a full-scale Great Pyramid, but a campaign for a scaled-down model is under way. The Earth Pyramid Project, based in the United Kingdom, is raising funds to erect a pyramidal structure in an as-yet-undecided location, built of stones quarried all around the world. It will contain a time capsule, to be opened 1,000 years from now.

Funded by governments and organizations around the globe, the Earth Pyramid will not only provide a window into contemporary culture for future societies, it will also serve as an opportunity to test Houdin's construction theory of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

Effective Personal Finance Tips Anyone Can Use | welcome to pfotm ...

These tips should help you get on the right track when it comes to personal finances. Learn how to manage your money smartly by cutting the unnecessary expenses and investing your money in the right places. You could secure a retirement fund or put your children through college if you apply these tips smartly.

Prepare yourself for retirement and maybe even to retire early. It is never too soon to get started on your path to retirement and by knowing how to save and invest sensibly, you can have an edge over virtually all people.

When it comes to maintaining your financial health, one of the most important things you can do for yourself is establish an emergency fund. Having an emergency fund will help you avoid sliding into debt in the event you or your spouse loses your job, needs medical care or has to face an unexpected crisis. Setting up an emergency fund is not hard to do, but requires some discipline. Figure out what your monthly expenses are and set a goal to save 6-8 months of funds in an account you can easily access if needed. Plan to save a full 12 months of funds if you are self-employed.

Set up a deduction from your paycheck to automatically go to your savings account. Saving is much easier when it requires no further conscious action. As you begin to think of your spendable income as the new, smaller amount, you can adjust your budget accordingly while your savings keep growing with every deposit.

Signing up for direct deposits eliminates the hassle of making a special trip to the bank every payday. It also helps you to avoid lost or stolen paychecks and will reduce impulse purchases that are made between the time your check is cashed and the time that it is deposited into your account.

To improve your personal finance habits, keep track of your actual expenditure in comparison to the monthly budget that you plan. Take time at least once a week to compare the two to make sure that you are not over-spending. If you have spent more that you planned in the first week, you can make up for it in the weeks to come.

Think of your retirement while you can still help yourself. Open a 401(k) or Roth 401(k) retirement plan or an IRA account to save money for your retirement years. Take advantage of your employer?s contribution as well, even if it is a smaller amount, it still represents free money for your golden years.

To eliminate emergencies killing your personal finances, pay your future peace of mind first. Set aside ten or more percent of your raw income for simple emergency savings or a liquid fund kept in cash, not an investment. Unexpected expenses are going to occur, this way when they do they hit your protective moat and not you nerves and stress.

With all the information this article has to offer you should already start thinking about strategies you want to use towards your personal finance goals. Remember that this article only contains a portion of what you can know about personal finance, so be on the lookout for more information and apply all of what you know to accomplish your personal finance goals.

The Role Of The Paralegal Or Legal Assistant In The Criminal ...

Paralegal or Legal Assistant is an thrilling profession in the Criminal Justice field. It is hard to picture a law office without a paralegal. They can be described as the appropriate hand of the lawyer. In this post I examine the role of the paralegal or legal assistant in the criminal justice field.

The legal assistant as the name suggests is there to assist the lawyer. It is vitally crucial to know that the paralegal can not give legal assistance or act as a lawyer. What the paralegal does ought to be below the supervision of a lawyer. The paralegal can do the following below the watchful eye of a lawyer:

1. The paralegal can conduct client interviews. They should identify themselves as paralegals to the client ahead of beginning the interview. In this instance, the legal assistant helps the lawyer ascertain the facts of a case by talking to the client. This saves the lawyer beneficial time. The lawyer can use that time to work on methods for the case.

two. The legal assistant can find and interview witnesses. If you watched the movie Erin Brockovich, you saw Julia Roberts play the function of a paralegal that locates and interviews clientele. In one of the scenes, she clearly states that she is not a lawyer. This underlines the point above that paralegals can?t give legal assistance. It also underlines the point that they determine themselves as such.

three. Legal assistants can investigation and prepare legal documents. Paralegals do acquire the coaching and encounter necessary to prepare legal documents. All the lawyer has to do is double check the function to make confident it meets the legal needs that such document demands. Again, I dont have to tell what an useful timesaver this is to a lawyer.

4. The paralegal can attend court trials. In this case, they assist the lawyer with the case files. This way the lawyer is not fumbling in court searching for files or evidence. The paralegal is there to keep him or her organized.

I can write far more volume on the role of the legal assistant or paralegal in the criminal justice field, but you get the point. It is indeed an thrilling profession. Consider of all the intriguing factors that can be involved in a legal case. As a paralegal, you can be in the middle of it all.

Sex-changing treatment for kids: It's on the rise

In this Dec. 12, 2011 photo provided by Children?s Hospital Boston, Dr. Norman Spack, of Children's Hospital Boston, poses for a photograph. Spack is author of one of the reports in the journal Pediatrics about teens and children who insist they were born the wrong sex and are requesting body-altering treatments. (AP Photo/Children?s Hospital Boston)

(AP) ? A small but growing number of teens and even younger children who think they were born the wrong sex are getting support from parents and from doctors who give them sex-changing treatments, according to reports in the medical journal Pediatrics.

It's an issue that raises ethical questions, and some experts urge caution in treating children with puberty-blocking drugs and hormones.

An 8-year-old second-grader in Los Angeles is a typical patient. Born a girl, the child announced at 18 months, "I a boy" and has stuck with that belief. The family was shocked but now refers to the child as a boy and is watching for the first signs of puberty to begin treatment, his mother told The Associated Press.

Pediatricians need to know these kids exist and deserve treatment, said Dr. Norman Spack, author of one of three reports published Monday and director of one of the nation's first gender identity medical clinics, at Children's Hospital Boston.

"If you open the doors, these are the kids who come. They're out there. They're in your practices," Spack said in an interview.

Switching gender roles and occasionally pretending to be the opposite sex is common in young children. But these kids are different. They feel certain they were born with the wrong bodies.

Some are labeled with "gender identity disorder," a psychiatric diagnosis. But Spack is among doctors who think that's a misnomer. Emerging research suggests they may have brain differences more similar to the opposite sex.

Spack said by some estimates, 1 in 10,000 children have the condition.

Offering sex-changing treatment to kids younger than 18 raises ethical concerns, and their parents' motives need to be closely examined, said Dr. Margaret Moon, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics' bioethics committee. She was not involved in any of the reports.

Some kids may get a psychiatric diagnosis when they are just hugely uncomfortable with narrowly defined gender roles; or some may be gay and are coerced into treatment by parents more comfortable with a sex change than having a homosexual child, said Moon, who teaches at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics.

It's harmful "to have an irreversible treatment too early," Moon said.

Doctors who provide the treatment say withholding it would be more harmful.

These children sometimes resort to self-mutilation to try to change their anatomy; the other two journal reports note that some face verbal and physical abuse and are prone to stress, depression and suicide attempts. Spack said those problems typically disappear in kids who've had treatment and are allowed to live as the opposite sex.

Guidelines from the Endocrine Society endorse transgender hormone treatment but say it should not be given before puberty begins. At that point, the guidelines recommend puberty-blocking drugs until age 16, then lifelong sex-changing hormones with monitoring for potential health risks. Mental health professionals should be involved in the process, the guidelines say. The group's members are doctors who treat hormonal conditions.

Those guidelines, along with YouTube videos by sex-changing teens and other media attention, have helped raise awareness about treatment and led more families to seek help, Spack said.

His report details a fourfold increase in patients at the Boston hospital. His Gender Management Service clinic, which opened at the hospital in 2007, averages about 19 patients each year, compared with about four per year treated for gender issues at the hospital in the late 1990s.

The report details 97 girls and boys treated between 1998 and 2010; the youngest was 4 years old. Kids that young and their families get psychological counseling and are monitored until the first signs of puberty emerge, usually around age 11 or 12. Then children are given puberty-blocking drugs, in monthly $1,000 injections or implants imbedded in the arm.

In another Pediatrics report, a Texas doctor says he's also provided sex-changing treatment to an increasing number of children; so has a clinic at Children's Hospital Los Angeles where the 8-year-old is a patient.

The drugs used by the clinics are approved for delaying puberty in kids who start maturing too soon. The drugs' effects are reversible, and Spack said they've caused no complications in his patients. The idea is to give these children time to mature emotionally and make sure they want to proceed with a permanent sex change. Only 1 of the 97 opted out of permanent treatment, Spack said.

Kids will more easily pass as the opposite gender, and require less drastic treatment later, if drug treatment starts early, Spack said. For example, boys switching to girls will develop breasts and girls transitioning to boys will be flat-chested if puberty is blocked and sex-hormones started soon enough, Spack said.

Sex hormones, especially in high doses when used long-term, can have serious side effects, including blood clots and cancer. Spack said he uses low, safer doses but that patients should be monitored.

Gender-reassignment surgery, which may include removing or creating penises, is only done by a handful of U.S. doctors, on patients at least 18 years old, Spack said. His clinic has worked with local surgeons who've done breast removal surgery on girls at age 16, but that surgery can be relatively minor, or avoided, if puberty is halted in time, he said.

The mother of the Los Angeles 8-year-old says he's eager to begin treatment.

When the child was told he could get shots to block breast development, "he was so excited," the mother said.

He also knows he'll eventually be taking testosterone shots for life but surgery right now is uncertain.

The child attends a public school where classmates don't know he is biologically a girl. For that reason, his mother requested anonymity.

She said she explained about having a girl's anatomy but he rejected that, refused to wear dresses, and has insisted on using a boy's name since preschool.

The mother first thought it was a phase, then that her child might be a lesbian, and sought a therapist's help to confirm her suspicion. That's when she first heard the term "gender identity disorder" and learned it's often not something kids outgrow.

Accepting his identity has been difficult for both parents, the woman said. Private schools refused to enroll him as a boy, and the family's pediatrician refused to go along with their request to treat him like a boy. They found a physician who would, Dr. Jo Olson, medical director of a transgender clinic at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

Olson said the journal reports should help persuade more doctors to offer these kids sex-changing treatment or refer them to specialists who will.

"It would be so nice to move this out of the world of mental health, and into the medical world," Olson said.
